The Winston Churchill School GCSE Results: Up-date 9th September 2014

We continue to celebrate the results of the GCSE examinations, the second highest outcome in the last 10 years.  Students and parents should be very proud of all that has been achieved.  Although there has been some concern that the English Language papers have been marked incorrectly by the examination board, AQA, and a number of up-grades have been received, improving our overall figure of 5A*-C including English & Maths to 68%.  The school is pursuing the board to ensure that our students are credited with an accurate grade.

With 26% of all grades achieved being A*/A, work continues to challenge students to achieve their personal best.  As you are probably aware schools are now judged on the outcomes from the first sitting of an examination, our results below compare the first entry against best entry. Winston’s entry policy is fully in line with government expectations.

1.  % First Entry A*-C Eng/Eng Lang = 79.1% (238 students)

2.  % Best Entry A*-C Eng/Eng lang = 79.5%

3.  % First Entry A*-C Maths = 79.9% (240 students)

Students and parents are celebrating a very positive set of GCSE results, where the school has managed to minimise the impact of recent government changes on examination outcomes.

The headline figure of 68% 5A*-C incl English & Maths, ensures that the school has met its target for this year.  Particularly pleasing is that 73% of students achieved at least a C grade or better in both Maths and English. 

The percentage of students achieving the EBacc is 47.2%, this represents students achieving C grade or above in an academic range of subjects.  Pass rates in subjects such as Maths, Geography and German have significantly increased and reflect the hard work of both staff and students, to ensure that we achieve the best outcomes possible.  Collectively, through a range of strategies, our students have been very successful and thanks should also go to Our Head Boy and Head Girl, Harry and Lily, for their contribution to leading the Year Group by example. 

 

These are very good results, which have been achieved by young people in a local authority comprehensive school.  Although examination achievement is regarded at Winston as very important aspect of the education we provide, it is complemented by the range of life skills and experiences that help our students develop from being children into young adults of whom we are rightly proud.  Our examination entry policy is simple; if we have taught you then we will enter you for the examination, we are not selective.

Winston has achieved a consistently high standard of examination results for several years now, but we are not complacent and will continue to work together to support individuals and groups and to drive up standards.

Information Evening for Year 9 and Year 11 parents

An information evening will be held on Thursday11th September. Year 9's meeting is at 5.30pm-6.30pm and year 11's meeting is at 7pm-8pm. Letters have been sent home with the students. Please log onto Frog where a  copy of the letters can be found in the letters sections for the relevant year group.

 

Cashless Catering Payments - issues resolved

The issues with the cashless catering system  (referred to below) have now all been resolved and the system is now fully operational.

Parents should be aware that the school has experienced problems with the electronic links between the on-line payment system and the school catering system in the past 24 hours.  This happened as far as we can determine between 15:15 and 19:50 and then after 21:00, until around 08:00 this morning.

In addition there have been problems with the revaluation machines on site and we are in the process of addressing this.  This means that some payments to student accounts have yet not updated on the system in school.  

These are systems outside of the direct control of the school, but we are currently working with the appropriate providers to rectify these issues.

These problems did affect the pace of the lunchtime service for Year 7 today as we confirmed the situation for each individual student, however as these problems are rectified the service level will improve significantly.  Additional time was allowed for students to finish their meal.

In the meantime any student affected will still be able to receive their lunch and any adjustments made at a later date to the individual account.

It appears any payments now being made are working correctly.

National Theatre Connections 2015 success

We are delighted to announce that The Winston Churchill School Drama Department has been chosen to take part in the 2015 National Theatre Connections festival of new plays.

 Emma Friend, National Theatre Connections organiser said, “We were inundated with applications, and were heavily oversubscribed for this extremely exciting year of National Theatre Connections. We are delighted to be able to invite The Winston Churchill School to participate in the 2015 Connections Festival. Each year the Connections team travels the length and breadth of the country to support and encourage the participants – the drama teachers and youth theatre directors who take on the challenge of staging a new play, and the young theatre companies. Each year we are thrilled by the skill, creativity, commitment and passion that go into each production, often on a shoestring budget and a rehearsal schedule carved out around school commitments.”

Connections is the National Theatre’s annual festival of new plays for youth theatres and schools. Connections 2014 involved:

• 10 Writers
• 230 Youth Theatre Companies
• 5,000 Young People
• 684 Performances
• 26 Partner Theatres
• 25,000 Audience Members

Connections aims to: 
   •   inspire 13-19 year olds with high-quality new playwriting
   •   give companies the knowledge, skills and confidence to bring the plays to life
   •   involve a wide range of young companies, giving additional support where needed
   •   encourage young people to get involved in all aspects of theatre making

Connections gives young people experience of professional theatre-making. Their experience mirrors that of a company producing a new play in any theatre in the country. They create marketing campaigns, design sets and costumes, operate lighting and sound boards, stage-manage their performances. In 2014, each company had the experience of performing in a leading regional theatre, at one of the Connections festivals around the country. 

Mrs Samantha Remnant will be making her school directorial debut as Director of our 2015 National Theatre Connections production, with Mr Donaldson and Mr Jolly acting as Co-producers. Auditions will be getting underway in late September with a production date of March /April 2015.
