Learning Review

Learning Review – Thursday 26 November & Friday 27 November 2015

The Learning Review will take on a new focus this year linked to the development of a core set of competencies for all our students. The Winston competencies are a range of skills that we believe will enable your son or daughter to become a more effective learner at school, will help them in the world of work and give them the life skills to be successful as an adult. The Winston competencies are as follows:

  • Resilience
  • Creativity
  • Independence
  • Communication
  • Critical Analysis
  • Collaboration
  • Organisation
  • Enquiry

The Learning Review meeting will focus on which of these competencies each student possesses as a strength and which ones they could develop. Over the course of the next two weeks the students will work with their tutor to complete the Learning Review booklet, The booklet will enable the students to identify their strengths linked to the competencies, but also recognise the skills where they need to make an improvement.

We would like parents to actively contribute to the discussion at the Learning Review meeting. A parent’s sheet outlining the competencies is available here  for you to review the key aspects of each competency, which we hope will enable you to embark on a fruitful skills discussion with your son or daughter at home.

Parents View Survey

We always welcome the views of parents and carers regarding the educational experience your son or daughter receives at The Winston Churchill School. A new parent/carer questionnaire has been created this term to provide you with the opportunity to feedback to us your views about the school and how we might further improve the quality of education being delivered. If you haven't already done so and you would like to contribute, please log into frog and click on the Parent View survey button to submit your views.

Do you have experience of Fundraising - Can you advise us?

I would be interested to hear from someone who has experience of fund raising, as I am seeking some advice for a large project, aimed at improving facilities for our students and the local community, which I would like to complete by 2017.

If you feel you could help in any way please contact the office on office@wcsc.org.uk or telephone 01483 476861.

Frog Parent Portal: issues with viewing student's homework

There is an issue with viewing your son/daughter's homework on the parent view of Frog. Sometimes no homework is being shown and other times some, but not all of the homework will be shown. It is being investigated and hopefully will be fixed very soon.

In the mean time you will be able to see student's homework on their own accounts.

Radio Woking Broadcasting from The Winston Churchill School, now on DAB

Radio Woking is a community radio station broadcasting to listeners in  Woking and the surrounding area and after a number of successful years transmitting across the internet has finally hit the airwaves.

The station is about giving you an alternative to the mainstream.  It’s not trying to be something for everyone every minute of the day, it’s about listening to a show that interests you.  Hopefully many shows will find your interest across our broad selection of programmes.

Levi Roots visits radio Woking

Winston students have a programme every school day at 3.00pm. There are new morning and afternoon programmes giving traffic and weather news and a whole variety of programmes throughout the evening and weekend, some with live music and guest presenters.  Take a look a the schedule for more details.

If you don't have a DAB radio don't worry, Radio Woking is still transmitting on the internet.

Justin Coll, the Radio Manager, talks about the station in the press release

School trips to Calais - Travel news

BBC News is reporting that it is anticipated that the strike by French ferry workers is for today only and as such does not currently affect any of our school residential visits due to travel via Calais on Monday 6th or Friday 10th July.  We will be monitoring the situation closely in the coming days and in the event of the strike continuing or reoccurring the school will continue to liaise with our travel companies to ensure the safety of our students.  Parents will be made aware of any precautions/changes to visits via the School website if these become necessary.
